Despite
not being an all new design, the new Escort has considerable
improvement
over its predecessor. It is based on the previous platform, which was
in
turn based on the previous generation of Mazda 323. Engineers increased
its torsional rigidity a lot so that the Escort is now a safer and
quieter
car to live with. Strengthened structure also benefits a better
handling,
although Escort remains a practical bread and butter rather than an
entertaining
performer.
A larger engine which displaced at 2 litres enables a smaller performance gap between it and Neon or Saturn. Moreover, the restyled appearance restores some lost ground to these 2 main rivals. This Escort has no relationship with European Ford's Escort, although both philosophy are similar : practical, cheap to buy and run, reliable. This means both Escort are not exciting enough to please enthusiastic drivers. Report created before 16 Feb 99. Last updated before 16 Feb 99. All Rights Reserved. |

The
new escort coupe aims at those who want a taste of sportiness but also
demand practicality and low running cost. It has achieved this.
Refinement
is good. Handling is crisper than the sedan, if not up to the level of
(European) Ford Puma and Hyundai Tiburon. Handsome styling, sufficient
cabin space and fine performance are other selling points.
