Surprise of the Year
Hyundai Ioniq 5 N
Electric cars
are usually blisteringly quick, but they are also criticized for
lacking emotional appeal, because the sound and power delivery of
electric motors lack character. Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is the first electric
car to try to simulate the emotional appeal of combustion engine
performance cars. Its N e-Shift programs the power delivery like an
8-speed DCT, introducing power interruption and drop of revs during
each artificial gearshift, even though that might not be the quickest
way to go. Its drive system can adjust front and rear
motor output to change the balance of the chassis. There's even a drift
mode to allow power slide. While some works still need to be done to
the drift mode and sound synthesizer, the tuning of throttle, steering
and brakes are expertly judged. It set a very high standard for
electric performance cars, and even many combustion ones struggle to
match.
